What is Bug Chasing?
The Bug Chaser, literally the ‘virus hunter’, is a person who actively seeks to be infected with HIV. It is an extreme and marginal practice, often misunderstood, which lies at the crossroads of psychology, sexuality, and risk-taking. The term is always used in English, and the act of seeking to be infected is called bug chasing.
What are the motivations behind Bug Chasing?
Why would someone want to contract a potentially fatal virus? The motivations are complex and deeply personal. For some, it is a form of ‘social suicide’, a way to break away from a life that does not suit them. For others, it is a paradoxical desire for belonging. In some gay communities where HIV is prevalent, being HIV-positive can be perceived as a kind of norm. The bug chaser seeks to join this group, to share an identity and a common experience. There can be a form of virus fetishism, an attraction to danger and transgression.
Some bug chasers develop a sexual attraction to HIV-positive men, especially those with a high viral load. The man who transmits the virus is called the ‘gift giver’. The ‘gift’ being the virus itself.
What are the risks associated with Bug Chasing?
Bug chasing is an extremely dangerous practice. Even though antiretroviral treatments have transformed HIV into a manageable chronic disease for many, there is no guarantee of how your body will react to the virus. You could develop a drug-resistant strain, or your immune system could be particularly weakened.
Furthermore, by seeking to be infected, the bug chaser exposes themselves not only to HIV, but also to all other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): syphilis, hepatitis, gonorrhea, etc. It’s a game of Russian roulette with one’s own health.
Bug chasing remains a highly controversial and often taboo phenomenon. It raises complex questions about consent, mental health, and individual responsibility. It is a dark and perplexing facet of human sexuality, where the desire for self-destruction mixes with a quest for identity.
