What is CEC (Civil Status Change)?
CEC, or Civil Status Change, is a french administrative term that covers a deeply human and political reality. It refers to all the legal steps a trans person undertakes for their identity to be officially recognized by the french State. This procedure allows their identity papers to be brought into conformity with their real gender.
Procedures for Civil Status Change
This process can take two main forms. The simplest is the change of first name only, which is now done directly at the town hall. But most often, when speaking of CEC for trans people, reference is made to the more complex procedure that takes place before a court. This is where not only the modification of the first name(s) is requested, but also the change of the sex mention (the famous “M” or “F”) on the birth certificate, which then conditions all other official documents.
The Impact of CEC on Transgender Identity
This is a crucial step, as it puts an end to systematic administrative misgendering and confers essential social legitimacy.
