What is Conversion or Seroconversion?

The term “conversion” or “seroconversion” is a clinical word that hides a simple reality: it is the moment when a person becomes HIV-positive after being infected with HIV. And let’s be clear, it’s a one-way street. Once you are HIV-positive, you cannot become HIV-negative again. There is no vaccine, no miracle cure.

The “Conversion Plan”: A Desire for Contamination?

In the bareback community, a “conversion plan” is a conscious approach. It is an HIV-negative person seeking to be infected. They will therefore look for an HIV-positive partner, a “plumber” or a “gift giver,” who will be willing to “fertilize” them and transmit the virus.

Why Would Someone Want to Be HIV-Positive?

For many, this idea is incomprehensible. Why would anyone want to contract a chronic illness that will change their life forever? The reasons are complex and personal.

Relief from Anxiety

Some speak of a kind of “relief.” The constant fear of being infected can be an enormous burden. For some, becoming HIV-positive is putting an end to this anxiety. It’s a way of saying: “That’s it, it’s done. Now I can have sex without this sword of Damocles hanging over my head.”

The Need for Belonging

Others evoke a form of belonging. Becoming HIV-positive means joining a community, sharing a common destiny. It’s a way of no longer feeling alone in the face of risk.

The Fetishistic Dimension

There is also a fetishistic dimension for some. The love of semen, of “cum,” can be so strong that it overcomes the fear of the virus. The sharing of semen becomes an act of communion, and contamination, an almost logical step in this quest for pleasure and intimacy.

A Reflection, Not an Excuse

Understanding these motivations does not mean excusing them. It is trying to put words to behaviors that may seem irrational. The pursuit of conversion is often a symptom of deeper malaise, loneliness, or a need for recognition.

What is the Reality of Living with HIV?

Living with HIV today is no longer a death sentence as it was in the 1980s. Treatments (triple therapy) are extremely effective. An HIV-positive person on treatment with an undetectable viral load no longer transmits the virus. This is the famous “U=U” (Undetectable = Untransmittable).

But it remains a chronic illness that requires lifelong medical follow-up, regular blood tests, and discipline in taking medication. It is not insignificant.

Your Body, Your Choices, Your Responsibilities

No one has the right to judge you for your desires or fantasies. But it is crucial that you have all the information at hand to make informed decisions.

If you are HIV-negative

If you are HIV-negative, protect yourself. Condoms and PrEP are your best allies.

If you are HIV-positive

If you are HIV-positive, be responsible. If your viral load is undetectable, you do not transmit the virus. But communication with your partners remains essential.

If you are considering conversion

And if you are considering conversion, talk about it. To a friend, a doctor, an AIDS advocacy organization. Don’t stay alone with your questions and anxieties. There are people who are there to listen to you, without judgment.
