What is Normativity?

Normativity is the invisible framework that governs our lives. It’s the idea that there is a “normal” way to live, think, and be, and that this normality is self-evident, that it is natural. However, this “norm” is never natural. It is always the product of a culture, a history, a power dynamic. It is a social construct presented to us as obvious.

What are some examples of Normativity?

Think of simple things: the idea that a “normal” couple must marry and have children, that “normal” success involves a permanent contract and buying a house, or that eating with cutlery is more “normal” than eating with chopsticks or with your hands. None of this is universal. These are just cultural habits that have been elevated to the status of a norm.

What is the problem with Normativity?

The problem with normativity is that it creates a hierarchy. Everything that conforms to the norm is considered good, right, and desirable. Everything that deviates from it is seen as strange, deviant, inferior, or at best, as a picturesque “exception.” The norm never needs to justify itself, while the margins must constantly explain and legitimize their existence.

How is Normativity linked to discrimination?

Understanding this mechanism is essential, as it is the root of many discriminations. Normativity is the breeding ground for sexism, racism, ableism, homophobia, and transphobia. It is by deconstructing these false obviousnesses that we can begin to imagine a world where diversity is no longer a margin, but the center of everything.
