What is Heteronormativity?

Heteronormativity is the direct application of normativity to sexuality. It is a system of thought that postulates heterosexuality as the norm, the default setting for human beings. It is the idea that the male-female relationship is the central, natural, and superior model to all others.

How does Heteronormativity manifest in our culture?

This belief permeates our entire culture. It is found in almost all films, series, advertisements, and songs that tell us love stories. It is present in family questions (“Still no girlfriend?”), in administrative forms, and in sex education at school. Heterosexuality is everywhere, presented as the insurmountable horizon of emotional life.

What are the consequences of Heteronormativity for non-heterosexual individuals?

For non-heterosexual individuals, this heteronormativity is a silent and continuous violence. It renders them invisible, forces them to constantly justify themselves, to come out again and again. It places them in a position of “the other,” of the exception that confirms the rule. Fighting against heteronormativity is simply affirming that all sexual orientations are equal and deserve the same visibility and respect.
