What are Meth Mites (Formication)?

Meth Mites, or formication in medical terms, is a terrifying tactile hallucination that can occur during the consumption of methamphetamine (crystal meth) or other stimulants. It is not an infection, but a pure product of your overheating brain. In French, it is sometimes referred to as ‘fourmillements’ (tingling) or ‘hallucinations parasitaires’ (parasitic hallucinations).

The Sensation: Insects Under the Skin

Imagine feeling insects crawling, digging, or swarming just beneath the surface of your skin. You don’t see them, but you feel them. It’s an incredibly real and distressing sensation. This hallucination can become so convincing that you start scratching frantically, pinching yourself, or even self-mutilating to try and extract these imaginary ‘parasites.’ This is what causes the sores and scars often seen on the skin of regular meth users.

Why Do Meth Mites Occur?

Meth Mites are a classic symptom of toxic psychosis induced by stimulants. The drug disrupts the normal functioning of your nervous system. Your brain misinterprets sensory signals and creates this sensation of parasites out of whole cloth. It’s a clear sign that you are experiencing a bad trip and that your body and mind are being pushed beyond their limits.

This phenomenon is a brutal reminder of the dangers of crystal meth. It illustrates how the drug can make you completely lose touch with reality and lead you to inflict severe physical injuries upon yourself. It is one of the darkest and most frightening aspects of stimulant addiction.
