Anal douching: how to do it without damaging the lining
Definition : Anal douching means rinsing the rectum with water before sex; done properly (lukewarm water, low pressure, two hours before, not too often) it is safe, but done too often or too harshly it irritates the lining and makes infections easier.

Do you really need to douche?
It isn’t compulsory. Many men douche to feel more comfortable for anal sex, fisting or big toys. But the anal lining is fragile: Sexosafe (Santé publique France) stresses gentleness. Douching too often, too hot or too hard causes irritation and micro-tears that make HIV and STI transmission easier.
Two kinds of douche
Sexosafe distinguishes:
- a quick douche (10 to 30 minutes), enough for anal sex: you only rinse the lower rectum;
- a full douche (more than 30 minutes), for fisting or big toys: better done with a suitable shower attachment than a bulb.
How to do it properly
- At least two hours before sex, never right before: leftover water can come out and the lining needs to recover.
- Lukewarm water, close to body temperature (37 °C).
- Low pressure: held upright, the jet shouldn’t rise more than about 10 cm.
- A lubricated nozzle, inserted gently, never all the way into the rectum.
- For a full douche: a jet of about 30 seconds, then expel squatting or lying on your left side; repeat until the water runs clear.
- A little mucus in the last rinses is normal.
Use plain water. No soap, shower gel, essential oils or scented products inside.
Products to avoid
Sexosafe warns against:
- anti-diarrhoeals taken to “block things up”: constipation and side effects, to avoid especially with liver problems or HIV;
- repeated laxative suppositories: they upset bowel habits and irritate the rectum;
- douching too often: better to rely on diet (fibre, pulses, dried fruit) for regular stools that are easier to manage.
Equipment hygiene
Your bulb or nozzle is personal. Wash it in hot soapy water after use, rinse well, let it dry. Don’t share it: sharing can pass on infections, including hepatitis C.
Warning signs
Persistent bleeding, lasting anal pain, fever: stop douching and see a doctor, possibly a proctologist.
