HIV and STI key figures France and world – PLANJUS Health

Why look at the numbers?

Figures don’t tell the whole story, but they show where the risks are and what works. Every figure below is dated and links to its source at the bottom of the page. They are updated with each new official report.

HIV in France (2024 data)

HIV in France in 2024: mode of transmission

According to the Santé publique France report published on 23 October 2025:

  • about 5,100 people were newly diagnosed with HIV in 2024, a stable number;
  • 42% were infected through sex between men, 53% through heterosexual sex;
  • 43% were diagnosed late, 27% at an advanced stage;
  • about 8.5 million HIV tests were done in labs, 20% of them without a prescription;
  • about 9,700 people were living with HIV without knowing it at the end of 2024.

Santé publique France notes that French-born men who have sex with men are the group most often diagnosed early and most reached by PrEP. But diagnoses are rising among 15-25 year-olds, and young men aged 18 to 21 are less familiar with prevention tools.

Bacterial STIs in France: a sharp rise

Bacterial STIs in France: rise between 2022 and 2024

Again according to Santé publique France, between 2022 and 2024:

  • gonorrhoea: +35% (+40% in men), about 25,800 diagnoses in 2024 in community care;
  • chlamydia: +30%, about 61,100 diagnoses;
  • syphilis: +12%, about 6,500 diagnoses.

CeGIDD clinics diagnosed 22,200 chlamydia, 13,500 gonorrhoea and 2,500 syphilis cases in 2024.

Prevention: PrEP and chemsex

  • PrEP: according to EPI-PHARE, 124,181 people used it between 2016 and June 2025, 67,505 of them in the first half of 2025. New starts have levelled off (about 20,000 a year).
  • Chemsex: according to Santé publique France’s ERAS surveys, 13% of sexually active men who have sex with men practised it in the previous 6 months (2023), a stable share since 2021.

HIV and STIs worldwide

HIV worldwide in 2025 according to WHO

According to WHO (fact sheet updated 27 July 2026), at the end of 2025:

  • 41.0 million people were living with HIV, 64% in the African Region;
  • 1.2 million new infections in 2025, 65% fewer than at the 1994 peak;
  • 570,000 HIV-related deaths in 2025;
  • 88% of people knew their status, 89% of them were on treatment, and 95% of those treated had a suppressed viral load.

For STIs, WHO estimates that more than one million curable STIs are acquired every day worldwide among 15-49 year-olds, and that gonorrhoea’s resistance to antibiotics is a major threat.

Key takeaways

  1. HIV is no longer falling in France: regular testing and PrEP remain the main levers.
  2. Bacterial STIs are surging: throat, anal and urine testing every 3 months is essential if you have several partners (where to get tested).
  3. Treatment works: early diagnosis means a normal life and zero transmission.
