What is a VTuber?
A VTuber is simple: it’s a streamer, a guy or a girl who makes videos on YouTube or Twitch, but instead of showing their face, they use an avatar, most often a manga-style character. Thanks to motion capture technology, the avatar moves at the same time as them, it smiles, it talks, it reacts. It’s like watching a cartoon, but live and interactive. The big advantage for the streamer is that it protects their privacy. They can become a mega star, make millions, without ever risking being bothered when they go shopping.
What is the relationship between a VTuber and their fans?
This creates a particular dynamic with fans. They are fully invested in a character that doesn’t exist, while knowing that there is a real person with their own thoughts and humor behind it. It’s a permanent role-play where the line between real and virtual is completely blurred. For some, it’s a highly profitable business; for others, it’s just a way to express themselves and create a community without having to manage the pressure of physical appearance.
